Gates Foundation: Cell Factories for Durable Protein Expression

Overview

Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, we aim to provide worldwide access to advanced cell therapy technology to prevent and treat infectious diseases, such as HIV and malaria. Hydrogel capsules or biocompatible devices are loaded with cells engineered to produce antibodies that neutralize HIV and malaria pathogens and are implanted in patients to provide long-term protection from these deadly diseases. This novel cell therapy platform aims to provide an option that is effective, safe, long-lasting, and convenient for patients, even if they have limited access to traditional healthcare services.
